THE shutting of the back gate at Oxford Station is not that unexpected.

The reality is few major stations these days have gates without barriers during peak times.

However, First Great Western should be aware of the consequences of its decision in regards to creating more overcrowding at the barriers on the main concourse.

At the best of times it can be a bit sticky, although that is in part due to easily-befuddled passengers.

But the company must ensure that if the main exit cannot cope at peak times, it is big enough to review the closure.
