ONE of three people accused of murdering a homeless man in Oxford has blamed the death on one of the other defendants.
More video footage of a police interview with Wayne Cattell – one of a trio accused of Denis Witney’s murder – was shown at Oxford Crown Court yesterday.
Cattell, 37, of Mortimer Road, Rose Hill, Daniel McCollin, 30, of Blay Close, Blackbird Leys, and Joanne Moriarty, 29, of Mortimer Road, Rose Hill, all deny Mr Witney’s murder.
Mr Witney, left, died following an incident at a house in St Clement’s Street, Oxford, in November, 2011.
In the video, filmed on November 14 last year, Cattell told police officers that it was McCollin who attacked Mr Witney in the living room of the house.
He said: “Denis did not attack Danny in any way.
“I think Denis didn’t really have the chance to defend himself in any way.”
Of the alleged assault by McCollin, Cattell said: “Totally unprovoked and way over the top.”
The jury heard Cattell describing the moments after the alleged assault.
He said: “First of all he is lying on the floor he was motionless at first.”
He added: “So I went and got some water and started to throw water.”
The trial continues.
