ONE of Oxford’s best-loved charities has been named charity of the year at the Thames Valley Business Awards.

Children’s hospice Helen and Douglas House, based in Magdalen Road, East Oxford, received the accolade on the day it marked its 30th anniversary. Judges described the charity as “exceptional people doing outstanding things for exceptional people”.

The charity was chosen for demonstrating an outstanding level of commitment across the entire organisation to its charitable aims and objectives, continuing improvements to its beneficiaries, and raising substantial sums in the face of economic uncertainty.

Chief executive Tom Hill received the award on the charity’s behalf along with Elizabeth Drew, who chairs the board of trustees. He said: “As a nominated charity we were put through a rigorous, probing interview, which makes this award truly worth having.

“I am indebted to the judges for choosing Helen and Douglas House from the charity nominees – each of which makes such a huge difference to the lives of their beneficiaries. The strength of support and goodwill for Helen and Douglas House at the awards ceremony from business leaders was palpable.”

Guest of honour at the awards in Reading earlier this month was Dragon’s Den star and businesswoman Hilary Devey. Forty-six businesses were shortlisted for awards in eight categories. Ms Devey told the audience: “Failure is not an option. Make sure you know your market and don’t be afraid to break the mould.”
