I HAVE just received a letter addressed to ‘The Manager’. Then follows a headline ‘Please don’t risk the reputation of your business by ignoring this letter’.

What business? This intimidating correspondence is from TV Licensing, who seem to want me to buy a licence for something that I do not possess, have never had, and am not intending to own in the near future. They kindly provide three ways in which to inform them that I don’t need a licence: 1. Email: I do not have this facility

2. Post: this seemed reasonable until I looked at the envelope provided – ‘you need to use a stamp’

3. Phone: I assumed that the number provided, starting with 0300, was freephone, so, only possessing a mobile, I walked to the nearest public box and attempted to call them.

Guess what – 0300 is not free! I then found the ‘reverse the charges’ details and tried that, but discovered that such calls cannot be made using that prefix. Rather than pay to tell TV Licensing that I haven’t got something that I do not need or possess, I will ignore the letter and look forward to the threatened visit from one of their enforcement officers.
