ONE of the men accused of murdering a homeless man described the assault in a police video shown to a jury yesterday. The jury at Oxford Crown Court were shown a video of a police interview from November 14, 2011, with Wayne Cattell – one of three people charged with the murder of Denis Witney.

Cattell is filmed describing what happened the night Mr Witney died in November last year.

Cattell, 37, of Mortimer Road, Rose Hill, Daniel McCollin, 30, of Blay Close, Blackbird Leys, and Joanne Moriarty, 29, of Mortimer Road, Rose Hill, all deny the murder of Mr Witney.

In the video, Cattell said that McCollin entered the living room at the house where he was staying at St Clement’s Street, Oxford, holding a lager can and, according to Cattell: “He used the can to smash Denis in the face. “As Denis hit the deck Danny started stamping on his head.”

Cattell then said McCollin started stamping on Mr Witney’s chest and said he tried to pull McCollin away.

Of Mr Witney’s injuries, Cattell said: “I didn’t really consider it to be as serious as it turned out.”

He said he cleaned Mr Witney up, who then left the house and Cattell went to check on him.

Cattell continued: “I said nobody deserved what just happened. I will make sure you get an apology.”

The trial continues.
