Sir – Bob Forster’s letter (November 1) lists some bad reasons why people object to road schemes and hopes the rules will be relaxed.

There may also be some very good reasons to object, however. In the case of the Cogges Link Road, which he cites, one reason was that the proposed road simply would not solve Witney’s traffic problem. When the inspector examined the evidence, he agreed. Sometimes the objectors are right and manage to save a gung-ho county council from a very expensive mistake. Without the planning system, Witney would be just as congested and the taxpayers £20m the poorer.
