Sir – On October 22, David Davies, MP for Monmouth, received a written reply to his question in the House of Commons concerning what progress had been made with the award of a campaign medal for those who served on the Arctic convoys.

In his response, Dr Murrison MP, said that Sir John Holmes, the independent chairman of the military medals review panel, had made an interim report on July 17 to the Prime Minister, but further re-examination of some issues remained to be determined and it was hoped that an outcome might be expected “by the end of the year”.

I am a supporter of the Arctic convoys, but my personal drive for the Bomber Command campaign medal (BCCM) has been ongoing since 2005 and my supporters across the world are losing patience at all these delays in reaching a firm decision from Sir John, and finally from our local MP for Witney and PM, the Rt Hon David Cameron.

I am impatient to learn whether our efforts to persuade Sir John and his panel that they should award the BCCM were/are successful and are due to report this to our PM first “by summer” then “by autumn” and now “by end of year”. How much longer are we supposed to wait for an award which should properly and justifiably have been made by our UK Government at the end of the Second World War?

Is our PM hoping that the coming influenza epidemic and harsh winter conditions might be then judged to make any awards unnecessary because so few Second World War veterans, or next of kin, will survive into 2013?
