Britons trying to get home from the US were left to endure at least one more day in storm-tossed New York when UK airlines were forced to cancel more flights yesterday.

But with UK travellers staying on in hotels as storms lashed the Big Apple, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic were able to resume some flights to America’s East Coast.

Virgin had to axe all its New York and Newark flights yesterday and also announced that one flight from New York and one from Newark that would have arrived at Heathrow this morning had been cancelled.

But Virgin was also able to resume its daily services yesterday to two other eastern US cities – Washington DC and Boston.

A Virgin spokesman said: “Passenger and crew safety is our number one priority and we are continuously liaising with local authorities to assess the situation and minimise the disruption caused to passengers wherever possible.

“We advise all passengers to check our website www.virginatlantic.com for the latest updates and advice on rebooking their flights.”

BA had to cancel all flights to and from New York, Newark, Baltimore and Philadelphia yesterday, but was able to operate a normal three-flight service to and from Boston and was also able to have a flight to Washington.
