Harry Styles has revealed he uses his break-ups as inspiration for his songwriting – but refused to confirm whether One Direction track Perfect referred to his relationship with Taylor Swift.
As soon as it was released, fans were quick to conclude that the single from One Direction’s new album Made In The A.M. was a response to Taylor’s hit song Style.
The pair dated briefly in 2012 and the lyrics include: “And if you like cameras flashing every time we go out, and if you’re looking for someone to write your break-up songs about, Baby I’m perfect.”
But Harry remained coy about whether the telling lines related to Taylor.
“I think people interpret songs in different ways. I’m never going to tell someone what a song’s about because I feel like it’s up to them,” he told People magazine.
Harry admitted he hadn’t heard the mash-up of the two eerily similar sounding songs, but gentlemanly said: “I’m sure it’s good.”
Bandmate Louis Tomlinson, who co-wrote the song with Harry, was less restrained.
“I think everybody draws from personal experiences, so of course to a degree I’m sure that influenced some of it,” he said of the rumour Harry’s break-up with Taylor was behind the song.
“Down to specifics to who that song is exactly about, that’s fan’s interpretation, I suppose.”
One Direction are set to go on hiatus from March 2016.
