Jay McGuiness, Kellie Bright and Peter Andre have all been backed by Craig Revel Horwood for a chance at the Strictly Come Dancing trophy.
The judge picked the three as potential finalists in his mid-series report for the Radio Times and didn’t hold back in criticising the stars who’d been booted off the series.
Craig thought Jay was “definitely capable of winning”, Kellie was “a real powerhouse”, and said of Peter, “his chances of winning are good”.
Naturally The Wanted’s Jay, who has consistently scored some of the top marks of the 13th series, got the most effusive praise from Craig.
Jay has “completely transformed” since he started. “Jay used to hide behind his hair – now he walks down the corridor like John Travolta,” Craig revealed. He also praised his ability to “adapt to every dance thrown his way”.
EastEnders actress Kellie Bright got a big thumbs up: “She’s out there, she’s focused and she’s a very good dancer.”
Although her day job on the BBC soap might limit her time available to train, Craig admitted that he and Kellie still fit in a drink or two at the bar after the show.
While singing might come naturally to Peter Andre, Craig confessed that he takes “twice as long” as the others to learn a routine.
But he makes up for it with his winning personality: “He’s really charming, happy-go-lucky and confident… a popular guy.”
His high praise, however, was tempered with some cutting words for the past and present celebs whirling around the dancefloor.
Craig branded Daniel O’Donnell “a bit dull” and said that Iwan Thomas “loved himself more than the dancing”.
If Jeremy Vine thought he had a chance, Craig was quick to correct him, stating: “He’s a double D – Dance Disaster!”
Anita Rani was tipped for the semi-finals if she put in the effort in training, and Jamelia’s chances were laughed off – “but funnier things have happened on the show!”
And Craig recommended “a shot of vodka” for uptight Proms presenter Katie Derham, claiming she’d make it to the end of the series “if she’s lucky”.
Faring better were Call The Midwife’s Helen George who had the technical skills from her classical ballet training, but in practice she was “wooden”.
If she curries favour with the voting public, there’s still a chance, he reckoned.
“With a bit of fire in her belly” Coronation Street star Georgia May Foote could be the competitor holding that Glitterball aloft in a few weeks’ time, but, Craig bemoaned, “she doesn’t excite me”.
