The number of people out of work and claiming benefit in Oxfordshire fell in September by 159 to 7,899, bucking the national trend which saw the number of claimants rise for the seventh month in a row to 1.6 million.

The percentage of people claiming benefit in the county remained the same as for the previous two months at 1.9 per cent.

All districts of Oxfordshire recorded a small fall in the claimant count except West Oxfordshire where the number rose from 895 in August to 908 in September.

Nationally the number of people out of work and aged between 16-24 rose to a record 991,000, although 270,000 of those were students seeking short-term employment.

The number of 16-18 year-olds increased by 3,000 to 205,000.
