Global sales of the Cowley-built Mini have achieved a new record.

Latest figures produced by parent company BMW show 81,053 cars were sold in the second quarter of the year, a rise of 35.6 per cent on the same period in 2010.

Over the six month period to the end of June, 141,913 cars were sold, a rise of 29.8 per cent.

BMW bosses said almost half of customers opted for a Cooper variant of the car.

The latest version, the Mini Coupe, is launched in the autumn.
