The number of people in Oxfordshire out of work and claiming benefit increased in January by 340 to 7,526 or 0.8 per cent of the working age population.

This is the first rise in monthly jobless figures for the county from the Office of National Statistics since June last year — but there are still 1,630 fewer people claiming benefit now than there were 12 months ago.

Oxford city has the highest jobless rate in the county at 2.4 per cent or 2,633 claimants. West Oxfordshire has the lowest rate at 1.3 per cent or 829 people.

National figures (which are not seasonally adjusted) show that 1,505,068 people are now claiming benefits — up from 1,425,192 in December.
