A TOP research scientist has been given £2m to set up a new lab at Harwell.
Prof So Iwata, of Imperial College, London, will use the giant Diamond Light Source to analyse proteins that play a key role in the human body.
As the first Diamond Professorial Fellow, he will use the £2m for a five-year project, setting up a new lab in the Medical Research Council’s research complex at Harwell, next door to Diamond, to prepare membrane proteins for analysis at the synchrotron. He said: “If we can unravel the secrets of these proteins’ functions, then drug developers could use this knowledge to design new small-molecule drugs that target and inhibit one of these individual proteins, thus reducing patient side effects.”
