OXFORD United had agreed a fee with Peterborough United for striker Tyrone Barnett on deadline day, but could not get the deal done in time.
And Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony said he was left “stunned” that the 28-year-old did not complete his move to the Kassam Stadium.
A number of clubs were interested in landing the highly-regarded forward, but it was Oxford who were leading the race for his signature.
However, the deadline passed without a deal being struck, to the surprise of the Peterborough chief.
“We had a few in for Barnett,” MacAnthony told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire.
“We’d a fee agreed with Oxford, him and his agent did not get it over the line for whatever reason.”
Barnett joined Peterborough for £1.2m in May 2012 and has since had loan spells at Ipswich and Bristol City.
“I thought it would have been a good move for him,” added MacAnthony.
“Oxford are a sleeping giant and the club could do very well so I’m a bit stunned he did not go there.
“But hey ho, when the window opens someone else will be in for him.”
