OXFORD United’s bid to sharpen their attack has been boosted by the capture of experienced striker Will Hoskins.

A free agent after being released by Brighton in May, the 28-year-old watched from the stands as the U’s lost 1-0 at home to Portsmouth on Saturday.

He has agreed a one-year deal, with the club retaining the option of a 12-month extension.

Hoskins joins a side who have been unable to turn encouraging performances into results, scoring once in losing all four Sky Bet League Two games this season.

U’s head coach Michael Appleton believes the addition will help solve the problem.

He said: “Will has bags of experience, has scored goals throughout his career and he works ever so hard.

“We have played well in every game so far this season, but not picked up the results and I think anyone who has watched us has seen where we needed to strengthen.

“We have been patient in trying to find the right player and we believe that Will fits the bill perfectly.”

Hoskins came through the ranks at Rotherham, where 16 goals in the first half of the 2006-7 season prompted Watford to swoop and take him into the Premier League.

He dropped down to League One with Bristol Rovers in 2010, scoring 20 goals to earn a £500,000 move to Brighton.

It began an injury-hit three years on the south coast and he has not played a senior game since rupturing cruciate ligaments against Blackburn Rovers in February 2013.

He missed the whole of last season before being released in the summer, but several League One clubs have been interested.

Hoskins was one of the first names mentioned when Appleton arrived at United last month.

And after a long wait, chief executive Mark Ashton, who worked with Hoskins at Watford, is delighted to finally get his man.

He said: “Right at the start of that search I said to Michael that we needed ‘someone like Will Hoskins’, but we knew there was interest from a number of higher league clubs.

“We met Will and explained what we are looking to build here and he really believes in the way we are approaching things.

“We are delighted that he has joined.”

Hoskins is unlikely to feature in tomorrow night’s Capital One Cup game at West Bromwich Albion.

He could make his debut against Dagenham & Redbridge on Saturday and Appleton is hopeful his summer recruitment is not yet over.

He said: “Maybe I’ll get a bit greedy and if we can do another one as well we will all be delighted.”

Great news, the signing we have been waiting for and it looks like there's more to come.
Credit the management for staying patient whilst some fans were very much the opposite!

Providing he can stay fit, he will be a massive player for us. Really hope that we can get a midfield attacker in. Collins is brilliant at what he does. , we just need someone driving us forward more. Then we will be a real force. We'll done Appleton, wish the results were better, but our style of play is far better than under Wilder.

Welcome Will, get fit, keep fit and get the goals, you may need to persuade the manager a supporting midfielder is needed first but welcome and good luck, the club is banking on you to score goals.

Ps. So you are under no pressure. Just relax and bang them in.

Does not look likely, Holt favourite to go elsewhere with Skybet. Would be good if it did happen, still a capable finisher.

I'm one of the inpatient supporters who are disgusted at playing four and losing four but credit where it's due. As opposed to all other signings so far, we clearly had to beat other teams for Hoskins. Once he gets fit, I think he'll make a big difference. However, agree that without quality delivery, this will be a pointless acquisition.
Come on MA and co. Give us some results befitting the yellow shirt and good luck Will. We're right behind you.

Beano folk with short memories - his last 2 seasons with us were poor. As for Hoskins I hope the bloke gets the lucky break he deserves after being out with a bad injury. Let's hope he rediscovers his scoring touch as we stop this dreadful run we're on. Still unconvinced the new Board has the resources to move the club forward and I'm still waiting for Appleton to prove his credentials as a Manager, he can't keep making excuses when it's his team. I'd prefer us to go out of league cup and concentrate on getting out of this league and going into a higher one. If we struggle against Dag&Red it could be a long slog of a season.

Could we all stop the beano come back debate now please. He's gone, it happened let's move on.

Will Hoskins welcome to the club, for me this could be the best signing the club has made for a very long time. He looked an excellent prospect in the early years of his career and through injury and probably wrong club choice he has stuttered.

He is what we need. That bit more of a poacher in the box but also does a fair share out of the box. Yes we are bottom of the league, yes we don't have any points and yes things need to change around. That said some of the best football for ages was played at the weekend and now hopefully with Hoskins on board it will only be a matter of time! Comes on boys let's get behind them....
