Matt French admitted he had been unlucky to secure only a silver medal at Glasgow 2014.
The Oxford-born clay pigeon shooter had to be content with second place in the Commonwealth Games double trap final at Carnoustie yesterday after England teammate Steve Scott produced a perfect performance to take gold.
Scott shot 30 out of 30 to pip the 29 scored by 33-year-old French, from Oakley.
And this came after both had made the gold medal match by denying India’s Asab Mohd in a three-way semi-final shoot-out.
“That score normally wins, by quite a margin,” French shrugged. “I couldn’t do a great deal more, but you can’t beat a man who doesn’t miss. Steve shot amazingly.”
Scott, 29, said: “It was probably the most passionate shoot-off I’ve ever been involved in because if I ever wanted anyone to beat me it would be Matthew.”
Former Oxford University student Ben Moreau finished 14th in the men’s marathon.
Moreau was England’s third man home in 2hrs 16mins 50secs.
He said: “The crowd was amazing. You would be running through a residential area and people would be running out of their drive to cheer you on.
“Being English, I was not expecting a lot of support from the Scots, but it was amazing and they were all out there shouting.”
Fellow Oxford graduate, Luke Caldwell (Scotland) came 13th in the 5,000 metres in 13.43.75.
Zoe Shipperley, a former pupil and staff member at St Edward’s School, Oxford, helped England’s women’s hockey team beat Malaysia 5-0 in their group match.
The defender, from Marsh Gibbon, said: “We had a game plan and managed to stick to it.
“It wasn’t a perfect performance, but the tournament is about building momentum and we certainly did that.”
Dan Fox, who won Oxford Blues at hockey and cricket, helped England's men trounce Malaysia 7-1.
Cyclist John Paul (Scotland), the 2011 Oxfordshire sportsman of the year, finished 11th in the Keirin.
Paul, whose parents live in Wantage, qualified automatically for the semi-finals, but could not build on his strong start.
England captain and 2011 Oxford Blue Tom Mitchell was ruled out of the rugby sevens tournament after a foot injury on day one at Ibrox.
He could only look on as his side were pipped 15-14 by Samoa in the quarter-finals on day two.
Former Oxford RFC player Sam Myers was part of the Australia squad, who beat Samoa 24-0 to secure the bronze medal.
England, who had a disappointing tournament, edged out Wales 17-15 to win the consolation plate.
In the gold medal decider, South Africa upset fav-ourites New Zealand with a 17-12 victory.
