THE horrors of trench warfare were brought to life in Abingdon this week by two secondary school teachers.
Rick Stevens and Gareth Howell, from Nottingham, are giving a series of free talks on the First World War at Abingdon County Hall Museum.
On Tuesday, they took primary and secondary school pupils through the evolution of trench warfare in northern France.
Yesterday, they showed off First World War grenades.
History teacher Mr Howell, 31, said: “As the armies moved around northern France troops eventually got to the stage where the men were exhausted.
“So they dug shallow trenches to take shelter in, but their opponents did the same, so neither could move.
“Before you know it you are living in underground cities.”
He said the talks had gone down “really well”, with more than 50 people attending throughout the day.
He added: “We have been really impressed with the response.”
