A school has now submitted a planning application to extend its gym for community use.
The £200,000 facility at Oxford Spires Academy will upgrade the existing site and the school hopes to offer the use of its gym to residents.
Oxford City Council is funding the work.
The city council is hoping to close down nearby Temple Cowley Pools, although a community group has been given a six-month time frame to raise money to buy it for community use.
An application will now be considered by councillors at a date yet to be set.
