A BURGLAR has been jailed after targeted several homes in the middle of the night in South Oxfordshire.

Jordan Axtell, 21,was sentenced at Oxford Crown Court on Thursday (February 22) after pleaded guilty to with one count of burglary of a dwelling, four counts of attempted burglary, and driving a motor vehicle without third-party insurance.

The charges relate to incidents in Lamborough Hill, near Boars Hill, on December 19. The driving offence occurred on December 21, 2023.

Axtell also admitted to being in breach of a two-year suspended sentence handed to him in March last year for dealing Class A drugs and being in possession of a bladed article – a knife.

Sentencing Axtell, who had written a letter full of ‘heartful remorse’, to 34 months in jail, Judge Ian Pringle said: “Make sure you abide by what you’ve written to me in that letter, it’s impressive, and make sure you don’t let down the people who are here supporting you in court today.”

The hearing that Axtell, of Acacia Avenue, Oxford, had been caught looking through the gardens in Lamborough Hill with a torch at about 5am on December 19.

For the attempted burglaries, only three owners were home while the fourth was on holiday in Ireland. Axtell could be seen looking through the gardens on a Ring camera device.

One family said they felt ‘physically sick’ when a neighbour told them the area had been targeted. Another said their three children now feel ‘very anxious’ as a result.

The count of burglary occurred in Cumnor Road in Boars Hill at about 5.20am. The owners woke up to find Axtell looking around their lounge with a torch.

After the defendant and the homeowners shouted at each other, Axtell fled the house after having stolen £20 from a handbag.

It was discovered Axtell had also went through the couple’s garage looking for items to steal. The couple said they felt ‘violated’ and have been left feeling ‘insecure and very paranoid’.

Defending Axtell, his barrister said the 21-year-old has been on remand since December 21 and is currently having a heart condition diagnosed while in prison.

He has also developed an eating disorder which he is receiving medical help for. It was heard that though he is 21 years old, his father describes him as having the maturity level of a 15 or 16 year old.

Axtell’s fiancée and parents were present in court to support him.

He received a 34-month prison sentence which he will serve half of before being released on licence
