RAF Brize Norton personnel have raised £3,150 for the restoration of the village’s war memorial.

Senior personnel joined Brize Norton Primary School children and representatives from the community for a cheque presentation.

The money will cover the cost of repairs to the 90-year-old war memorial, which stands alongside St Britius Church.

The project will see the memorial cleaned, repointed and its slabs relaid. The work is expected to be completed next month.

Parish council chairman Keith Glazier said: “The war memorial is in desperate need of repair, and this grant will make such restoration possible.

“The memorial displays the names of numerous personnel from the village, many of whose relatives still reside in the community.”

Group Captain Eddie Cole said: “This memorial means a lot to our servicemen and women, who understand and can identify with the concept of giving one’s life in the service of their country.

“Memorials such as this are an important part of our heritage and history, and it’s fitting that we remember and honour the fallen in this way.

“The memorial also means so much to the villagers of Brize Norton, many of whom lost relatives during the Great War.

“I’m pleased that RAF Brize Norton is able to donate this cheque to facilitate the restoration of the war memorial, which will stand in tribute for many more years to come.”

The station’s charities committee raises money through its service personnel and last year raised about £200,000.
