LUKE Garbutt believes there is still a chance for Oxford United to look back on this season positively.

Having spent much of the campaign in Sky Bet League One’s relegation zone, the U’s best run of the season has taken them up to 13th place ahead of tomorrow’s meeting with Wycombe Wanderers.

While they are not yet safe, they are only a point away from the top half, while 11 points from the final seven games would see them surpass last season’s total.

Although it would still see United finish well off the pace of the play-off pack, given where they have been this term Garbutt views the final five weeks as an opportunity to change opinions.

He said: “There’s a lot to play for – you could easily get in the top half of the table and then everybody would think ‘it’s a decent season’.

“That’s how the league’s been shaped up.

“We’ve just got to keep that momentum going and make sure that our mentality is right every game and not come off it because we’ve had decent results over the last few weeks.”

As well as the team in general, it applies to Garbutt individually.

Having struggled initially at left back after joining on loan from Everton, he has been reinvented higher up the flank.

It has helped United tighten up defensively – they have not conceded while Garbutt has been on the pitch in his last four appearances.

With 30 games under his belt it is the most the 25-year-old has played since 2011/12 and he is aiming to finish on a high.

“People remember you at the end of the season,” he said. “Hopefully we get the job done and kick on from there to get a top-half finish.

“All I want to do is play, no matter what position it is, I want to help the team and have an impact.

“I feel in recent weeks I’ve been doing that.”
