FORMER Oxford United captain Adam Murray has been sacked as AFC Fylde head coach following the club’s 3-0 defeat at Oxford City.

Olly Sanderson scored a late double to help the Hoops lift themselves out of the Vanarama National League relegation zone, after Josh Parker had given City the lead from the penalty spot.

Murray guided the Coasters to promotion last season, winning the National League North title.

However, the club sit four points adrift at the bottom of the National League after 15 games this campaign.

An AFC Fylde club statement read: “Following the recent run of results, the board of directors have decided to relieve head coach Adam Murray of his duties with immediate effect.

“The board would like to place on record its sincere thanks to Adam for achieving last year’s promotion to the National League and wish him all the best for the future.”

Murray joined the U’s as a player from Macclesfield Town in January 2008, going on to score 11 goals in 97 matches.

The midfielder became captain for the 2008/09 campaign and was an ever-present as United finished seventh in the Blue Square Premier.

Murray was a regular in the first half of the following season, but a back injury meant he played his last game in January 2010 and missed out on promotion via the play-offs.

He was released before the club’s first campaign back in the Football League.
