KARL Robinson insisted there was nothing lucky about Oxford United’s four penalties at Gillingham.

Cameron Brannagan became the first player in English Football League history to convert four spot-kicks in one game as the U’s thrashed the Sky Bet League One strugglers 7-2.

The first penalty came either side of Billy Bodin’s opener and Matty Taylor’s header as United went 3-0 up after 19 minutes, with the visitors in cruise control from then on.

Anthony Forde scored a late seventh on a record-breaking day for the club.

Robinson said: “I don’t think we were great at times, I think we were a bit stop-start.

“Maybe that’s the manager in me, but I’m really thrilled.

“Every penalty was a penalty, but we have to make those runs to get them.

“Our movement was good, I thought our rotation was exceptional.

“There’s a real maturity within our play, to come here without Jamo (James Henry) Gavin Whyte, Herbie Kane and without one or two deals we might do is a really good sign and I’m really pleased with that performance.”

United have got until 11pm tomorrow to complete their transfer business, with Middlesbrough forward Marcus Browne heavily linked to return on a permanent deal.

The U’s are reportedly in the race to sign Northern Ireland Under 21 midfielder Oisin Smyth, while former striker Danny Hylton has also been mentioned.

Robinson revealed two meetings are pencilled in for this afternoon as the club work out their plan of attack, but he would not be drawn on how many signings he wants before the window shuts.

He said: “I don’t want to put a number on anything right now.

“We won’t be bullied into anything and we’re quite confident with where we are.

“What I really love about this ownership is we don’t start low and go high.

“We start at our top one (offer) and we’re honest. If you want to come down to that, that’s brilliant – if you can’t, we walk away.”
