DAN Agyei has joined Sky Bet League One strugglers Crewe Alexandra.

The forward leaves Oxford United for an undisclosed fee after two and a half seasons at the club.

Agyei, 24, scored 11 goals in 93 games for the U’s after arriving from Burnley in August 2019.

He made some important contributions, including a late effort to help beat rivals Swindon Town last March and two crucial goals in successive 3-2 wins at Shrewsbury Town.

But the former AFC Wimbledon trainee was unable to nail down a place in the team and made only 12 League One starts in his time at the Kassam Stadium.

Agyei’s most productive spell came in the final three months of last season, when he produced a string of impressive displays to help United reach the play-offs.

He was unable to build on it in the first half of the current campaign, though, with his only goals coming in the Papa John’s Trophy defeats to Cambridge United and Stevenage.

Agyei was in the final six months of his contract and his last U’s appearance came as a late substitute against Wigan Athletic on December 18.

Crewe are 22nd in League One, six points from safety.

Agyei is the third player to leave United this month, following Jordan Thorniley’s recall by parent club Blackpool and Joel Cooper’s loan move to Port Vale. They are yet to announce a signing.

It leaves the U’s with three spaces in their registered squad, although that rises to four if you include long-term injury absentee Alex Gorrin.
