KARL Robinson will travel to Gillingham later than normal as he aims to maximise the final hours of the January transfer window.

United have two away matches either side of deadline day, with trips to Priestfield tomorrow and Wigan Athletic on Tuesday.

OPINION: Will it be a busy end to the transfer window for Oxford United?

Players and staff will travel the afternoon before each game, but Robinson plans to arrive the following morning as he concentrates on off-pitch matters.

The U's head coach said: “I’ll stay behind here, there’s work still to be done.

“I’ll leave early on Saturday morning (for Gillingham) and get there before they get out of bed.

“I don’t think there’s anything to worry me right now.

“We’re in control of a lot of things.”

Tomorrow’s opponents are without a win in 16 matches and only climbed off the foot of Sky Bet League One thanks to a 0-0 draw with Shrewsbury Town in midweek.

Gillingham sacked manager Steve Evans earlier this month, with former U’s winger Alex MacDonald assisting interim boss Steve Lovell.

They have used four different formations in their last five matches and Robinson is taking nothing for granted, particularly with his record at Priestfield reading five defeats and a draw.

He said: “I don’t think I’ve won there myself, so it’s a very difficult game.

“They’ve played so many different systems over recent weeks, which makes it difficult to understand what shape they’re truly going to go in.

“When you look at the players they’ve got in the middle of the park, they’re good players who have been brought in to compete and for whatever reason that’s not been the case.

“It’s not for me to get drawn into the strengths and weaknesses of them.

“I know their staff who are currently in charge have got a very difficult job on their hands.”
