OXFORD United do not want to be on the receiving end of the next surprise result in Sky Bet League One.

Tomorrow’s visitors Morecambe are 18th in the table, 12 places below the U’s, and playing in the third tier for the first time in their history.

But the Shrimps have already beaten Sheffield Wednesday and Lincoln City this season, while they drew with Ipswich Town and held leaders Plymouth Argyle last weekend.

Karl Robinson will be joined on the touchline by his namesake Stephen Robinson, who took over at Morecambe in the summer after Derek Adams’s departure to Bradford City.

The pair are already familiar with each other and United’s head coach is not underestimating tomorrow’s opponents.

He said: “I know Robbo really well, we did one of our coaching badges together over in Northern Ireland.

“He’s done an unbelievable job.

“I know people say I’m ultra-positive about the teams we’re playing, but I have so much respect for the opposition and how well-coached they are.

“They have had some incredible results so far this season, we’re going to need everyone to get behind each other and make sure there’s as many people as possible in the stadium to force this result in a positive way.”

Despite their lowly position, Morecambe’s total of 24 League One goals is one more than United’s.

A big reason for that is Cole Stockton, who has found the net ten times this season to top the division’s scoring charts alongside Rotherham United’s Michael Smith.

OPINION: Forget winning runs - Oxford United's performances are enough to get excited about

The Shrimps striker won League One player of the month in August and September, so the U’s are well aware of his threat.

Robinson said: “He’s a goalscorer, so every time you go up against these goalscorers in a rich vein of form you’re always suspect to conceding if you give them an opportunity.

“Our job is to make sure we don’t give him that chance and make sure we dominate possession.

“You also know you’re going to be vulnerable on the counter-attack because of the way they play.”

After tomorrow, United’s next two league games are at Ipswich Town and third-placed Wigan Athletic.

Midfielder James Henry said: “Maybe a win takes a little bit of pressure off you going into those two games, but we want to win every game.

“Every player will say the same.”
