EDDIE Pepperell built on his strong display in Scotland last weekend by getting among the opening-round leaders at the BMW PGA Championship.

The Abingdon golfer, fresh from his first top-ten finish for a year on Sunday, carded a brilliant five-under par round of 67 at Wentworth.

It puts him just one shot behind leaders Tyrrell Hatton, Justin Harding and Adri Arnaus.

Pepperell has performed well at the Surrey course in the past, but got off to a shaky start with a bogey at the third.

It was quickly forgotten, as he picked up shots at the par-five fourth and par-three fifth.

Another birdie at the eighth saw the Frilford Heath member reach the turn two-under.

Pepperell continued his climb up the standings by making up another shot at the par-five 12th.

It was followed by successive birdies at the 16th and 17th to cap off a fine afternoon.

Pepperell’s second round begins at 7.45am tomorrow.
