May 7, 2016: Oxford United 3, Wycombe Wanderers 0

OXFORD United sealed automatic promotion to Sky Bet League One with a superb victory over Wycombe Wanderers.

Chey Dunkley, Chris Maguire and Callum O’Dowda all netted in the second half as the U’s triumphed in front of a sold-out crowd.

Heavy rain did not ease United's nerves in a tense first half, with Michael Appleton’s men needing a win to guarantee third tier football in 2016/17.

Danny Hylton had several chances, but the sides went in 0-0 at the break.

The U’s were more at risk of dropping out of the top three the longer the scores remained level, but they edged in front eight minutes after the restart.

Maguire swung in a corner from the left and Dunkley found space to power a header home.

United pressed for that all-important second goal and it arrived 18 minutes from time.

Kemar Roofe was fouled by Aaron Pierre in the penalty box and Maguire stepped up to send keeper Ryan Allsop the wrong way.

The goal gave the U’s breathing space and home fans began to get the party started.

It was left to O’Dowda to cap an unforgettable day, with the winger too strong for Sido Jombati before firing home in stoppage time.

Oxford Utd: Buchel, Kenny, Dunkley, Wright, Ruffels, MacDonald (O’Dowda 78), Sercombe, Lundstram, Maguire, Hylton (Bowery 85), Roofe (Waring 87).
