Candidates for the upcoming city council elections have shared their electoral vision.

The Independent Oxford Alliance Party launched in November last year and while spokesmen say it is not explicitly 'anti-LTN' they emphasise their desire for a "return to democracy" in the city.

Ian Yeatman, Chaka Artwell and Sal Naqvi will be contesting the Cowley, Barton & Sandhills and St Clement's ward seats respectively at local elections in May this year.

Mr Yeatman is a lifelong Cowley resident who lives in the Littlemore area.

He said: "I didn't really expect to be involved in politics but I just became disillusioned."

Mr Yeatman, whose father is a blue badge holder, previously opposed a decision by Oxfordshire County Council to introduce Automatic Number Plate Recognition Cameras 'ANPR' without exemption for those in possession of a badge.

Secretary at the IOA, he noted an "increased amount of drug taking" in the ward and "decisions not to maintain parks".

Chaka Artwell is described by the Independent Oxford Alliance as "a long-time local campaigner who regularly holds Oxford City Council to account, challenging them on their policies and representing the needs of the community".

Mr Artwell has lived in the Barton & Sandhills ward, where he will be standing, for 20 years.

The local government hopeful said: "Congestion especially from three o'clock onwards is intolerable.

"We are all getting completely ignored."

He noted that the controversial traffic measures had "not been imposed here but that doesn't mean to say they won't be".

When asked what changes to Barton specifically he would like to see, Mr Artwell said: "I just can't believe we haven't got the ability or thinking power to find a way of having liveable wage rental accommodation."

He added: "The current emphasis on carbon and green issues has taken away from emphasis on the economy.

"I would try to help small and medium-sized businesses and entrepreneurs."

St Clement's candidate Sal Naqvi was born and raised in the area where he will be standing.

He said: "I want to be a part of a common sense approach, in how to balance the importance of safety on the roads, the potential of poor air quality and pollution without having such a detrimental impact upon peoples quality of life."

He added: "I hope to set up local events, where individuals can meet, share skills and resources, to support each other in saving or income streams and create a sense of community.

"When making big decisions that may have lasting effects on the area, I would like to bring a referendum style opportunity for each individual to have a voice.

"That voice would then influence how a councillor will vote in the decision making process."

A list of the current councillors for each ward is as follows:

Paula Dunne (Oxford Socialist Independents)
