Smashed glass left “maliciously” in a city centre park has been cleared up as the council is set to monitor the area more closely.

One parkgoer has said there have been several incidents of smashed glass at Bertie Park in South Oxford in recent weeks.

The latest incident on Wednesday (February 14) has been described as the “worst” it has been.

Oxford City Council said they are only aware of the most recent incident and will continue to the area.

The parkgoer, who asked to remain anonymous, said: “This time a number of bottles were maliciously smashed.

“You could see that it wasn't somebody accidentally dropping a bottle because the glass was scattered across the playground, elsewhere on the recreation ground and in the grass.

“The same thing had happened at the entrances to the multi-use games area.

“A helpful neighbour reported this to the council, and so someone arrived from the parks department and just got stuck in to clean up the park before the kids arrived for the afternoon play session.”

A city council spokesperson said: “We take the safety and cleanliness of our community spaces very seriously.

“We are only aware of one incident regarding broken glass at Bertie Park.

“This was addressed promptly by the ODS Streetscene team ensuring that the area was made safe for all park visitors.

“The council's two park patrol officers will continue to monitor the area to deter any further incidents.

“We encourage members of the public to report any similar issues to us so that we can address them as quickly as possible.”
