It might look like a lake now, but a flooded field could be the future site of a major housing estate.

More than 150 homes are planned on the land north of Oxford Road in Thame by developers.

But some living in the area have warned that future homeowners will be at risk because the field “is prone to flooding”.

Earlier this month, the site was partly submerged in the deepest floodwater residents had seen "in 14 years”.

The planning agents for the developers insisted the intended site is at “low risk” of any type of flooding.

Estate company Savills made the claim as it submitted plans for 154 homes on behalf of the applicants – a collection of six companies and individuals.

But worried homeowners have written to their MP John Howell with concerns over the development.

More than 70 of them have also objected to the plans as part of a public consultation, which runs until February 1.

In one public comment, Martin Poulter, who lives in the town, said: “Flooding in this area has increased year by year.

“The Environment Agency has said that there is likely to be more rain and flooding in future years.

“If the development proceeds, then any houses built there or nearby may be flooded.”

Richard Dalton, also from Thame, added: “Houses would be constructed with their feet dangling into or close to the waters on the flood plain.

“With the river flooding more frequently, and set to become even worse, the additional water runoff from the development would add to this existing major problem.

“Water levels have been greater this year and more prolonged.

"The proposed development would cause even greater problems here and for villages downriver where roads are now regularly impassable with flooding.”

Another commenter, Julie Davis, said: “The proposed land is frequently under water and in recent weeks had the deepest floodwater I have seen in 14 years of living in Thame.

“Also we are already suffering frequent discharges from an overloaded sewer system into the river Thame.

“Adding more houses to this will surely exacerbate this.”

South Oxfordshire District Council, the planning authority, has set a target decision date of March 19.

The applicants are Bloor Homes, Regeneration Thame, JF Brown, FJM Castle, BJ Thornton and JC Bull.

Savills said the application is informed by "site specific modelling" which takes into account the Environment Agency’s latest advice on climate change

In its planning statement, the company said the area is at “low risk” of flooding from the river or ground water.

Savills has been approached for further comment.
