Cherwell District Council has published this week’s planning applications for Bicester, which include proposals to alter an old post office.

The former post office, in South Side, Steeple Aston, now exists as a three-bed semi-detached house with large rear gardens and off-street parking.

The planning application seeks to remove the property’s conservatory and replace it with a two-storey extension to the rear.

The design and access statement reads: “The building is constructed in rubble coursed stonework with large ironstone quoins and window details to the front elevation.

“All under a natural slate roof. The dwelling is within the Steeple Aston conservation area.

"There are no listed buildings or other heritage assets within reasonable distance, the nearest being Bladebone House on the junction between Paines Hill and South Side.

“This proposal utilises a very similar footprint to the current conservatory, extending slightly further towards the rear garden but being narrower than the current building.

“The ground floor of the two-storey extension will be largely obscured by the existing ground levels and the Old Forge.

“Similarly, the first floor will only be visible from the rear garden and a very limited view from south side.

“The proposed extension emulates the existing building width and therefore current eaves and ridge heights.

“The extension will provide a family bathroom at first floor level and allow the reconfiguring of the ground floor to include much improved kitchen facilities and dining area along with a new utility and ground floor toilet.

“The design adopts a similar palette of materials to the existing building using rubble coursed stonework to all elevations, all under a natural slate roof.

“New windows and doors will be powder-coated heritage profile aluminium and feature a top light section to maximise natural light.

“The ‘link’ between the new and existing pitched roofs will be set back to the inside face of the wall and will be constructed using milled lead to the face and lead grey single ply membrane to the roof.”

Other notable applications this week include proposals to make alterations to Heyford Lodge in Middleton Stoney.

The applicant seeks to build a two-storey rear extension with a single-storey lean-to, together with an enlargement of the open framed canopy over the front door.

HMP Bullingdon is the subject of a new application for a non-material amendment, namely design changes to ancillary buildings.

This proposal relates to a previously permitted application, which includes the development of a new accommodation housing block, new office building, new workshop building, an extension to the existing medical office and a new ‘multi-faith’ building.
