An Indian restaurant with a history of illegal workers and poor food hygiene ratings has “permanently closed” in Bicester town centre.

Jaflong, an Indian and Bangladeshi restaurant on Market Square, will not reopen again as the building is put on the market.

Google and Tripadvisor both show the restaurant has closed whilst their website has been taken down.

A listing on Rightmove shows that the building is up to lease at £2911 per month on a ‘long term’ deal.

The listing reads: “A prime located Listed Building that was previously occupied by Jaflong Restaurant now proprietor now retired.”

The Oxford Mail has attempted to call the restaurant but the phone was not picked up.

In 2020, the restaurant had its premises licence revoked after suspected illegal workers were found there working.

It meant the restaurant was not able to sell alcohol at all, irrespective of the time of day.

Five staff members were suspected of working illegally and two were arrested during a raid by Home Office officers in October 2019.

The restaurant also received a £20,000 fine.

Problems including food safety concerns, pigeon mess in a courtyard next to the kitchen window, blocked fire exits and an underground tunnel connecting two cellars were also identified.

In 2022, the restaurant was given the minimum score from the Food Standard Agency after an assessment.

The minimum score of zero-out-of-five means that “urgent improvement is needed”.

The restaurant maintained the score in their latest inspection earlier this year on February 1.
