A man has been fined after damaging a low-traffic neighbourhood (LTN) bollard in Oxford.

The man, who lives in the city and whose age has not been revealed, has been issued a conditional caution for criminal damage to the LTN on Howard Street on Monday, March 13.

As part of the conditional caution, the man has paid a fine to cover the costs of the damage.

The bollard has been removed from its fixture in the road.

A Thames Valley Police spokesperson said: "This demonstrates that action will be taken against those who look to damage the low-traffic neighbourhood bollards."

Earlier this year, a BBC Panorama documentary explored how low-traffic neighbourhoods have affected Oxford householders and businesses.

The programme featured the theft of the bollard from Howard Street which has been repeatedly driven over, pulled out of the ground and even set on fire.

The BBC said the bollard on Howard Street was "probably the most abused bollard in the UK".

A video released by Coalition for Healthy Streets and Active Travel and Oxfordshire Liveable Streets showed drivers destroying the bollard in Howard Street 20 times over a period of just three weeks last summer.

The pictures showed one individual ripping one out of the ground and walking off with it as well as one person setting one alight.

Bollards are currently in place in East Oxford and Cowley that allow only pedestrians and bikes to pass.
