Residents have fitted a high-tracker to an LTN bollard which has been repeatedly vandalised.

It emerged in last night's BBC Panorama documentary which explored how low traffic neighbourhoods have affected Oxford householders and businesses.

The programme featured the theft of the bollard from Howard Street which has been repeatedly driven over, pulled out of the ground and even set on fire.

BBC’s news climate editor Justin Rowlatt said: 'Do we know where this bollard, which went missing this afternoon, do we have any idea where it is?'

Zuhura Plummer, of the group Oxfordshire Liveable Streets, told him: 'We have some idea of where it is.'

Mr Rowlatt continued: 'You have been sent a screenshot haven't you, can you share it with me?'

Ms Plummer showed the presenter her phone, which displayed a symbol showing where the bollard and high-tech tracker were, just yards away in a deserted house having apparently been put through a broken window.

A video released by Coalition for Healthy Streets and Active Travel (CoHSAT) and Oxfordshire Liveable Streets showed drivers destroying the bollard in Howard Street 20 times over a period of just three weeks last summer.

The pictures showed one individual ripping one out of the ground and walking off with it as well as one person setting one alight.

The groups support the scheme which aims to reduce traffic and encourage walking and cycling, but some residents say it has displaced vehicles and badly damaged businesses.

It has been the target of ‘unprecedented levels of vandalism’, according to Oxfordshire County Council.
