Mr Monopoly took to the streets of Oxford as a new edition of one of the world's most famous boards was announced for the city centre.

The mascot of the board game visited likely landmarks that are expected to feature in the new Oxford version yesterday morning.

This included the Radcliffe Camera, the Carfax Tower and Westgate shopping centre.

Whilst walking around the city he was stopped by locals and tourists for photos with many asking about the new game.

The city first had its own Monopoly board in 2001 but the game has since been discontinued.

For the new board, unlike in 2001, the public will get its say on which Oxford landmarks should feature on the multi-coloured squares.

In 2001, the Ashmolean Museum was 'Mayfair', the game's most expensive square whilst Wolvercote was ‘Whitechapel Road’ the least expensive square.

The board is being produced by London-based games company Winning Moves UK, who made the first edition, under licensing from global branded entertainment leader Hasbro.

Yasmin East, from Winning Moves UK, said: “We are really looking forward to it. It’s really exciting to be in Oxford and to spread the word around.

“It is a re-edition but that was over two decades ago and it has been asked for loads because everything has changed, not in terms of the old architecture but what people have that local pride in.

“We are all about the public suggestions. It’s really key for us, making sure the new generation gets a say.”

The multi-coloured Monopoly property sets will be themed in genres from heritage to tourism, education to shopping and business to charity.

Known for a large number of newspaper printing offices, Fleet Street could include the Oxford Mail on the board.

Ms East explained: “It is very possible. We do like to feature a newspaper to have a little nod to the original Fleet Street on the original Monopoly board so if it’s voted up enough you will see it on there.”

Before the game goes to production the public can propose Oxford landmarks and cards to feature in the game.

You can recommend ideas by emailing oxford@winningmoves.co.uk or visiting the official Oxford Monopoly Facebook page.

Suggestions from the public for the Oxford game are invited until 11.59pm on Thursday, May 25.

The game is set to be available in November.

The popular board game dates back to the 1930s and it originated from a version in the United States called The Landlord's Game which was created by American game designer Lizzie Magie in 1903.

The Parker Brothers, an American toy and game manufacturer, published Monopoly in 1935 before being absorbed into the multinational company Hasbro in 1991.
