Oxford has landed the honour of getting its very own edition of the world’s most famous board game Monopoly.

The city first had its own Monopoly board in 2001 but the game was discontinued years ago.

Since then there has been a social media campaign for a new edition and Monopoly bosses have confirmed a new board will be created later this year.

The game is set to be available in November.

The board will see Oxford-themed property squares and chance and community chest cards.

For the 2023 board, unlike in 2001, the public will have its say on which landmarks should feature on the multi-coloured Monopoly squares.

An official announcement will take place this morning (May 12) as Mr Monopoly, the brand’s icon, will visit likely landmarks that are expected to feature in the game, starting at 10am at Carfax Tower.

The board is being produced by London-based games company Winning Moves UK, under licensing from global branded entertainment leader Hasbro.

Winning Moves UK is the same company that produced the customised Oxford board back in 2001.

At that time The Ashmolean Museum was ‘Mayfair’, the game’s most expensive square.

Yasmin East, from Winning Moves UK, said: “This time round everything is up for grabs and the public will have its say.

“It’s a new board for a new generation.”

The multi-coloured Monopoly property sets will be themed in genres from heritage to tourism, education to shopping and business to charity.

Before it goes to production the public is being invited to suggest Oxford landmarks and cards to feature in the game.

You can suggest ideas by emailing oxford@winningmoves.co.uk  or visiting the official Oxford Monopoly Facebook page.

Suggestions are invited from 10am on May 12 until 11.59pm on May 25.

The popular board game dates back to the 1930s and it originated from a version in the United States called The Landlord's Game which was created by American game designer Lizzie Magie in 1903.

The Parker Brothers, an American toy and game manufacturer, published Monopoly in 1935 before being absorbed into the multinational company Hasbro in 1991.

Other cities and towns across the UK have also got their own version of the game which can be played by two to players.

Monopoly is described on Amazon as the "fast-dealing property trading game" and it has a reputation for taking a long time to finish.

A limited collector's edition of the game resold for £600 in 1991.
