As ITV gets ready to announce the transmission dates for the final series of Oxford-based detective series Endeavour, we are featuring some facts that fans of detective drama may not be aware of.

While the dates of the last three episodes have not been announced, ITV says it will confirm the dates on February 15.

1: The Inspector Morse prequel started out as a pilot episode in 2012. It ran for 90 minutes and was watched by eight million viewers in the UK. Fans loved it and the series ran for another 10 years, with series 9 being the last series.

Series 9 is expected to be shown from the end of this month.

2: As well as being the star of the show, playing a young Endeavour Morse, Shaun Evans has also directed a number of episodes.

3: During the sixth series, which was released in 2019, Lady Frederick Windsor, also known as Sophie Winkleman, joined the cast for a two-episode story. She played the role of Isobel Humbolt, the volatile wife of an Oxford professor.

4: Colin Dexter, the author of the Inspector Morse novels, was given cameo roles in early episodes of Endeavour. He also featured in the Inspector Morse and Lewis series.

5: In 2020, Shaun Evans said he had avoided watching Inspector Morse because he didn't want it to influence his portrayal of the detective.

6: It is understood that Colin Dexter, who died in 2017, insisted that Shaun Evans would be the last actor to play Inspector Morse.

7: Oxford bakery Happy Cakes has been baking for actors and staff on the set of Endeavour for many years.

They made some cupcakes on set - the last time they baked for Endeavour - when the final scenes for series 9 were filmed in the autumn.
