A man was left trapped in a shop elevator for three hours after a power cut.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue crews from Wallingford Fire Station and Didcot Fire Station were called to the Waitrose store in Wallingford at around 1.20pm today (December 14).

When the crews arrived it quickly became apparent that the lift car was stuck between two floors and a 20-year-old male employee was stranded.

The employee had reportedly been there for nearly three hours.

Due to a complete failure of the lift equipment firefighters were unable to move the lift car and so had to make access to him through the top of the car from inside the life shaft, with the use of electric cutting and drilling equipment.

The employee was recovered “safe and well” and was returned to the care of his colleagues.

The fire service explained the fault had been caused by a power cut in the town which had affected multiple properties.
