Some roads are now closed for the first half of the week to allow for Europe’s longest street fair to take place.

Abingdon Michaelmas Fair begins today at noon and ends On Tuesday, October 11 at 11pm.

As such the following roads will be closed until 9am on Wednesday, October 12 – Abingdon High Street, Market Place, Ock Street, Stratton Way, from Bath Street to Ock Street, The Square and West St Helen Street, from the high street to Lombard Street.

The Michaelmas Fair is the longest street fair in Europe, with its origins in the shortage of labour following the Black Death in 1348.

The fair was a hiring fair, the equivalent of today’s employment agencies and online job websites.
