PLANS to partially redevelop a music venue, to create a hotel, are set to be signed off tomorrow.

After a decision was deferred last month, Oxford City Council’s planning committee will now make a call on the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Centre, in the city centre.

The committee is recommended to approve the application to partially redevelop the site, in order to build a 130-bedroom hotel.

The item was deferred so that more information could be gathered on whether live music events at the hall would disturb hotel guests.

Planning committee members had raised concerns that noise from the centre could disturb hotel guests, which in turn could prevent it being used for this purpose in the future.

The centre has been empty for two years, with it deemed no longer financially viable, a council report states.

The report adds: “The Deaf and Hard of Hearing Centre decided to let out the hall for community use to gain further financial income but this did not go far enough to ensure that they could financially retain the site.

“In summary, the proposed development would be an acceptable development and would also make an efficient use of the site.”
