An Oxford councillor has been missed from the short list of three who could become the Labour Party’s candidate for Stretford and Urmston in the next general election.

Trafford Council's leader Andrew Western and executive member for culture, leisure and strategic partnerships councillor Joanne Harding are included, as is Iram Woolley.

However, the list has left out Oxford Councillor Tom Hayes and author and broadcaster Paul Mason, as well as Abisola Arobieke.

This result comes after the labour councillor announced in May that he would step down from his position as Deputy Leader and zero carbon cabinet member.

In a post of Twitter Mr Hayes said: “I’m proud of our work to tackle the climate crisis in socially just ways and thrilled my friend Chewe Munkonge is the new deputy leader.”

Mr Hayes continues to be a councillor for the St Clement’s ward in Oxford.

He wanted to be the next Labour candidate for Stretford and Urmston in Greater Manchester, to tackle the cost-of-living crisis, help rebuild the NHS and bring green jobs to local communities.

A safe seat for the Labour Party since its creation in the 1990s, Stretford and Urmston returned a majority of more than 16,000 for Kate Green at the last general election.

It means whoever is chosen as the candidate stands an excellent chance of becoming the area's MP in 2024, or before if the next general election is earlier than scheduled.
