The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June brought back memories of marking her 25 years on the throne.

Street after street was full of streamers, bunting and rows of tables and chairs as everyone toasted her during a special weekend in 1977.

The Oxford Mail reported: “As the people of Oxfordshire let down their hair for the biggest knees-up since the Coronation, they were asking: ‘Why don’t we do this more often?’”

Jericho played host to Oxford’s largest street celebration, with tables laden with sandwiches and cakes spreading the length of Cardigan Street.

On Barton estate at Headington, more than 80 children donned fancy dress to parade around Wick Close before settling down to a Punch and Judy show, tea and games.

A fundraising jumble sale paid for children in Old Marston to spend a day at Cotswold Wildlife Park at Burford before a tea party and knees-up for more than 200 residents in Cromwell Close.

A procession of floats and decorated bicycles kicked off an all-day Jubilee jamboree on the Florence Park estate at Cowley, ending with a tea party for 450 children.

Nearly 300 children from the Garden City estate at Kidlington sat down to tea, followed by a film show and an entertainer.

Thousands flocked to South Park at Headington on Bank Holiday Monday for an ‘Orjee’, organised by Oxford Rotary Club, with live music, arena events and fireworks.

Meanwhile, celebrations got off to a flying start in Abingdon with a flock of racing pigeons being released. More than 2,000 revellers packed the town’s Market Place to see the town mayor and his 15 fellow councillors indulge in the ancient tradition of bun throwing from County Hall to the people below.
