Oxford Mail readers have been giving their views after more than 60 people were fined in court for breaking social distancing rules.

The people all appeared at Oxford Magistrates’ Court during the last six months for breaking social distancing rules on the number people allowed to gather.

The 62 people fined by the court took part in gatherings of two or more people either indoors or outdoors.

Some of those who ignored restrictions and took part in a gathering of two or more people were fined £1,760, made to pay a victim surcharge of £176, and costs of £90.

Some readers said the fines should not have been issued as the Government has been accused of hosting parties at Number 10 during lockdown in 2020.

Sue Gray is conducting an investigation into reports of parties in Downing Street breaking the Covid restrictions at the time.

According to media reports, 17 gatherings allegedly took place in either Downing Street - where the prime minister lives and works - or other government departments during the Covid pandemic.

Most recently Downing Street has admitted staff gathered with Boris Johnson inside No 10, to wish him a happy birthday on June 19 2020, during the first Covid lockdown.

KAREN BOWELL: “This is a joke when Number 10 can party when it suited them. What’s good enough for some is also good enough for Number 10. No fairness in this pandemic!

“We are supposed to do what we are told or get heavy fines yet Number 10 who where the ones to laid down the rules could party when the wanted.

“What a huge joke makes me so very angry when I lost my dear dad to Covid and he couldn’t even have have the funeral of a very respected man which he truly deserved.

“To say I’m disgusted with Number 10 is an understatement. I’m so angry!”

SIMON JAGGS: “Everyone should have their fines returned.

“If the rule makers can’t keep to them it’s bloody hypocritical to fine others.

“I kept to the rules but this is disgusting from the courts.”

LORRAINE JACKSON: “What about a Downing Street list?”

SAM CURRAN: “I’d ask for your money back.”

SJ KIRBY: “I’d be asking for a refund.”

JAMES TAYLOR: “What an absolute joke If Number 10 are not fined for the many times they broke the rules then I hope you refund these people!

“You can’t have one rule for the country and then another for the people in charge.”

MEGS MIRI: “This is so wrong! It makes me so angry fining people like these when Boris Johnson held parties whenever he wanted to really?”

NEIL HEWITT: “Unless all those that attended Government ‘parties’ are prosecuted including Mr Johnson and fined, all those that have been fined, should have their convictions quashed and fines refunded.”

MARGARET NICHOLLS: “I’m sick of hearing about it now - it’s time to move on.”
