Butchers and greengrocers have been busy during the coronavirus pandemic as customer demand for fresh produce increased.

Here we look back at some of the staff, including those in the Covered Market, who have served the city.

When the pandemic started at the beginning of last year greengrocer Bonners in the Covered Market launched a delivery service.

Soon it was delivering its fruit and veg to destinations across the county and adding in produce from other fresh food sellers in the market.

Husband-and-wife team Gordon and Verity Piggott, who run Bonners, joined forces with 13 other market traders to spearhead a home delivery service.

The pair were soon processing up to 200 packages a day.

Bonners completely overhauled its business model after many clients in the hospitality sector stopped their orders at the start of lockdown.

Thankfully, as restrictions have eased, those wholesale clients have returned.

At its peak, the couple, from Cumnor, would work six 14-hour days per week, with their children even answering the phones and taking orders.

The boxes include fresh produce from traders in the market, including the Oxford Cheese Company, Fellers butchers and the Missing Bean coffee company.

Oxford Mail: Joe Devlin at Pickle & Lime

Like many businesses in the market, Bonners has been a fixture for several decades, having started trading in 1952.

Joe Devlin, who runs Pickle & Lime greengrocer in Botley Road, also noticed an increase in demand for fresh food.

Celebrating the store's one-year anniversary in April, Mr Devlin said: "It has been very successful.

“The lockdowns have definitely made people want fresh produce more.
