‘ABANDONED’ bikes in the city centre will be given to charity or recycled for scrap metal.
Tags have been left on bikes on Broad Street and Catte Street, near Oxford University colleges where students might not have returned since lockdown.
The strip of waterproof paper says: “This bicycle has met the Oxford City Council’s criteria to be tagged for removal. Therefore after seven days from the date shown, it will be removed at their convenience and recycled after 35 days from the date shown.”
About seven bikes had been earmarked for removal when the Oxford Mail visited the racks on Sunday.
Now Oxford City Council says its company, Oxford Direct Services, have been put in charge of removing all of the bikes that are ‘unroadworthly’ or ‘abandoned’ in the city centre.
Officers have been securing ‘notifications’ of removal on the handlebars that say the bikes will be cut away after seven days.

All the bikes will then be stored at the ODS depot in Marsh Road (OX4 2HH) for 35 days.
A council spokesperson said after that unclaimed bikes are offered to charities or recycled for scrap.
Both universities have been told that the bikes are being removed.
Anyone wanting to make a claim for an abandoned bike should phone 01865 249811.
