ABANDONED bikes left locked up in Oxford are set to be 'removed' by the council. 

Tags have been left on bikes on Broad Street and Catte Street, near Oxford University colleges where students might have not returned since lockdown.

The strip of waterproof paper says: "This bicycle has met the Oxford City Council's criteria to be tagged for removal. THerefore after seven days from the date shown, it will be removed at their convenience and recycled after 35 days from the date shown." 

However, some bikes were supposedly tagged on March 11 - 11 days ago - and are still locked up.

About seven bikes had been tagged for removal when the Oxford Mail visited the racks yesterday. 

It comes after The British Transport Police said it would be 'culling' the bike racks at Oxford and Didcot train stations in January after commuters left their bikes in the pandemic.

It is not confirmed how Oxford City Council decided which bikes would be tagged or when and how they will be removed. Oxford City Council has been contacted for a comment.
