CAMERAS and bollards have been installed after angry motorists were seen driving on the pavement to get around roadblocks.

Last week, Oxfordshire County Council began trialling a new Low Traffic Neighbourhood (LTN) in Cowley, where boulders and planters were placed to stop certain 'rat-runs' through the streets.

Angry motorists frustrated by the new scheme were seen to be driving onto pavements to get around the new boulders and planters in place to stop through-flow traffic.

The council has now installed posts and cameras in some locations to prevent vehicles from circumventing the traffic blocks.

Residents in the Temple Cowley area will also see the same measures go live from Monday at several locations.

These include:

  • Crescent Road
  • Junction Road
  • Salegate Lane
  • Temple Road

Locals from Church Cowley, Temple Cowley, and Florence Park were introduced to the LTN scheme last week as part of a six-month trial.

Dr Amar Latif, Labour candidate for Cowley Ward, said: “I am grateful to the Oxford Mail for forcing the County Council to take action.

"It was an accident waiting to happen and now thanks to the Oxford Mail the pavements are safe once again.”

Next week a number of meetings will be taking place to discuss the LTNs in the Cowley area.

Councillor David Henwood has arranged several public online meetings for residents to discuss the matter. The first will take place next Thursday between 7pm and 8.30pm on Google Meet.

Anyone who wants to attend the meeting is asked to email david@cowley.news or cllrdhenwood@oxford.gov.uk

Dr Latif will also be holding a Zoom meeting next Tuesday at 6pm regarding the implementation of the LTNs.
