LOW traffic neighbourhoods are currently being rolled out across three neighbourhoods within Cowley.

The Florence Park, Church Cowley and Temple Cowley LTNs were given the go-ahead just last month, with the promise they would be rolled out in February and March.

In the interactive map below, we have plotted just where roads will be closed to through traffic in these areas, according to the consultation documents published by Oxfordshire County Council which is implementing the scheme.

The map above includes all three LTNs being rolled out in Cowley.

LTNs are intended to prevent ‘rat running’: the practice of commuter cars or other through traffic using residential roads as short cuts.

The schemes use ‘point closures’ – usually bollards or planters placed in roads – to create artificial cul-de-sacs.

While all three schemes include these point closures, two of them also include new 'bus gates' which can be used by buses as well as cyclists and pedestrians.

There have been opponents to LTNs when they have been rolled out in parts of London, with objectors saying they lead to more congestion and pollution on main roads.

Supporters says that in the long term they can lead to a phenomenon called traffic evaporation, where fewer people are likely to drive on the roads in the LTN and surrounding streets.

The three LTNs in Cowley are the first of their kind to be rolled out in Oxford, and will run for a six-month trial before a decision is taken about their further future.

Other areas of the city are likely to have LTNs as well including Headington and Jericho.
